Centrally located in Jefferson County, Jefferson is the county seat. The City of Jefferson is located partially within the town. Today, Jefferson has a population of 7,300.

On December 18, 1836, at the close of the Blackhawk War, the first settlers came to a place they later named Jefferson. The frame of a house fashioned at Bark Mills (Hebron) was brought up the river on a scow and elevated on a piece of ground, the present site of the Jefferson House. In the spring of 1839, William Sanborn, an industrious resident who foresaw a growth pattern for Jefferson, built a two-story frame building on Main Street to serve as a hotel. After it was burned down, a nearly identical building called the Sawyer House was built on the same spot.

The Village of Jefferson was incorporated on April 13, 1857. The village grew and prospered, and the Wisconsin legislature approved its incorporation as a city on March 19, 1878. At the time of its incorporation as a city, Jefferson had a population just under 3,000. There were kerosene lamps, coal and wood stoves, barns, hitching posts, dirt streets, and a horse-watering tank in the middle of Main Street. These things created a quaint, small-town atmosphere.

Jefferson, Wisconsin combines the ease of urban living with the beauty and freshness of a rural environment. The City of Jefferson is located approximately midway between Milwaukee and Madison; it lies 25 miles north of Janesville and within about 60-90 minutes from the the Fox River valley to the north and Rockford, Ilinois to the south. This location affords local businesses as well as both commercial and consumer travelers access to major transportation routes without the high cost of living usually found in larger metropolitan areas. The City of Jefferson welcomes the opportunity for business expansion, offering various programs to assist new and existing industrial, retail and service businesses.

Jefferson educators are justifiably proud of its outstanding school system. While meeting high academic standards, both public and parochial education is geared to the total needs of the child. Sports and other extracurricular activities, for both boys and girls, are included as an essential part of their complete educational program. Jefferson is also home for the well known St. Coletta School, where the sisters of St. Francis of Assisi give specialized care and education to the children and young adults with learning disabilities from across the United States and Canada. The Fort Atkinson branch of Madison Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin campuses in Madison and Whitewater are all conveniently located within easy driving distance.

Golf courses and golf course lots abound throughout the area. Southern Wisconsin, celebrated for its gently rolling green hills, is a delightful spot for residents to plan or hold golf getaways. Of course, golf is just one of the many outdoor and sporting options available to residents of Jefferson and Jefferson County; water sports of all kinds, tennis, biking and hiking, youth athletics, rock climbing and spelunking can easily fill your three-season schedule, while in fall and winter, the changing leaves and seasonal landscapes offer wonderful times for skiing, snowmobiling, skating and more.

Nearby Milwaukee is known internationally as the City of Festivals. Following suit, Jefferson's own Gemeuchtlikeit Days (pronounced ge-meekt'-lee-kite) was started in 1971 to celebrate the German heritage of many of the residents of the Jefferson area. The term connotes a coziness and the notion of belonging, social acceptance, cheerfulness, the absence of anything hectic and the spending of quality time. The festival was first held under tents in the downtown area. In 1975 the festival was moved to the Jefferson County Fair grounds and has been held there every year since then.
